FIBA U16 Regional Youth Camp unfolds in Cameroon

The city of Douala, Cameroon is hosting the FIBA U16 Regional Youth Camp from October 14-17, 2024, at the Japoma Arena. For the first time, 40 boys and 40 girls from across Africa will participate, guided by top basketball figures like Cheikh Sarr, Alfred Aboya, Don Showalter, Irv Roland, and Joe Touomo. This camp aims to nurture the next generation of Africa's basketball stars.

FIBA U16 YOUTH CAMP

Douala, Cameroon's economic capital is currently hosting the FIBA U16 Regional Youth Camp, marking a historic first for the country. The camp that began on October 14 is taking place at the Japoma Arena where the continents next crop of basketball superstars are being nurtured. The camp is bringing together 40 boys and 40 girls from across Africa.

The gathering underscores FIBA's commitment to promoting youth basketball across Africa. The participants, aged under 16, are benefiting from the tutelage of world-class coaches and instructors, signaling a serious investment in the next generation of African basketball stars. The camp is led by an elite team of seasoned basketball professionals, including Cheikh Sarr, the renowned Senegalese coach who is the camp's Director. Sarr’s experience, which includes leading national teams and extensive work with FIBA, makes him an ideal leader for this initiative.

Joining him is Alfred Aboya, head coach of Cameroon’s national men's basketball team, a figure well-known for his commitment to the growth of basketball in the region. Aboya’s presence brings a local flavor to the camp, inspiring the next generation of Cameroonian players. Also bringing their expertise to the camp are USA youth basketball legend Don Showalter, known for his success with USA Basketball and Irv Roland, a former assistant coach for the Utah Jazz in the NBA who has worked with elite players in the league. FIBA instructor Joe Touomo is also on the panel contribute, rounding out a team of top-notch basketball minds.

The selection of Douala as the host city speaks volumes about Cameroon’s growing presence in African sports, and the Japoma Arena, a modern facility that is welcoming its first international event, provides the perfect setting for this camp. This event is a significant milestone, not only for the athletes involved but also for Cameroon’s reputation as a rising hub for basketball in Africa.

With the camp bringing together athletes and coaches from across Africa like South Africa, DR Congo, Mali, Senegal, Morocco, Eswatini and many more, it is serving as a crucial platform for identifying and fostering young talent. It's an opportunity to grow the game across the continent, ensuring a bright future for African basketball at the international level.
