In a showcase of skill and experience, Cote d’Ivoire continued their winning streak in the FIBA 2025 AfroBasket Qualifiers, defeating Central African Republic with a decisive 93-67 victory. Following a triumphant opener against Madagascar, the reigning AfroBasket silver medalists displayed unwavering dominance in Cairo.
Once more, Alexander Poythress shone as the game's top scorer, netting an impressive 17 points and grabbing six rebounds. The Elephants showcased a balanced offence, with every player chipping in at least one point. Even Aboubacar Seydou Hima, who tallied just one point, underscored the team's depth and collective effort.
Despite Central African Republic's spirited efforts, guided by the never-tiring Evans Ganapamo's 15 points and 3 rebounds, and veteran Max Kouguere's 13 points, the Fauves couldn't withstand the relentless offensive onslaught from Cote d’Ivoire. The Elephants demonstrated their prowess early, claiming the first quarter 28-16 and extending their lead to 22 points by halftime.
Cote d’Ivoire started the match with a sense of urgency, quickly establishing a lead and showing no signs of fatigue from their previous encounter. The first-quarter performance set the tone for the game, with the Elephants displaying a dazzling array of offensive plays and defensive prowess. The halftime advantage of 53-31 reflected the team's grip on the game.
Despite a brief surge from Central African Republic in the final period, where they managed a 16-14 run, it proved insufficient to overturn the Elephants' commanding lead. The Ivorian squad, led by experienced head coach John Douaglin, showcased a blend of strategic brilliance and individual brilliance on the court.
With this victory, Cote d’Ivoire stands tall with a perfect 2-0 record in the AfroBasket Qualifiers, positioning themselves for a ticket to the 2025 AfroBasket.
On the flip side, Central African Republic faces a challenging road ahead with a 0-2 record. Their upcoming clash against Madagascar in the November qualifying window becomes a crucial opportunity to rekindle hope and salvage their 2025 AfroBasket aspirations.
Speaking at the post-game press conference, John Douaglin express how happy he was with his charges’ performance.
“We had a very great game, both on the defensive and the offensive side. Someone asked me if I was troubled by the fact that the players could have lost their means. But we corrected that and here is the result,” he said.
He also hailed Central African Republic for their play.
“Let’s not minimise what they did. They didn’t go easy on us neither,” he recalled.
Central African Republic head coach Sylvain Lautie and captain Max Kouguere, on the other side, are already eyeing their next game against Madagascar. According to them, it will be a do-or-die moment, with both teams ready to fight on the court.
But he also analysed his team’s shortcoming, blaming a more organised Cote d’Ivoire side.
“We were late to adjust, and they had a good rotation with every player spending less than 20 minutes on the court. On the side, they had very little turnovers. Let’s face it: they have been better than us”, he noted.
Veteran player Max Kouguere is adamant that they will make the most of their time on the court in the next game.
“I don’t have pressure to play the last game in this window. But we’re going to come here and try to win this game tomorrow for our country”, he ended.
