Game Review: APR vs FBA

FBA Stuns APR in a Gritty 63-55 Victory at the WBLA 2024

The atmosphere at the Marius Ndiaye Arena in Dakar, Senegal, set the stage for a dramatic encounter in the 2024 Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA). Fans were treated to a high-stakes clash as Côte d'Ivoire’s FBA defied the odds, securing a gritty 63-55 win over APR of Rwanda, one of the tournament favorites. This pivotal game underscored the fierce competitiveness of this year’s WBLA, where even the mightiest teams have faced unforeseen challenges.

APR began the game with a commanding performance in the first quarter, outscoring FBA 18-13. Led by Shaina Pellington, who put on a dazzling display with a game-high 18 points, APR seemed poised to maintain their dominance. Their aggressive defense and fast-paced offense appeared too much for FBA to handle early on.

However, the tide turned dramatically in the second quarter. FBA, undeterred by APR’s early surge, shifted gears, employing a suffocating defense and quick transition plays that disrupted APR’s rhythm. The Ivorian side went on a 22-13 run in the quarter, ending the half with a 31-22 lead. This pivotal momentum left APR scrambling to find answers.

The third quarter was where FBA truly shone, building on their newfound confidence. They extended their lead to a game-high 26 points, showcasing a balanced offensive attack spearheaded by Saran Berthe, who led her team with 14 points. The trio of Aspen Williston, Amma Maria Flore, and Aminata Soraya added 10 points each, demonstrating FBA’s depth and versatility.

FBA capitalized on APR’s poor shooting, which was an abysmal 24% from the field. APR struggled to penetrate FBA’s defense, often settling for contested shots, while FBA punished them in transition, scoring 16 fastbreak points. In addition, FBA dominated the paint, racking up 36 points and exploiting APR’s defensive lapses.

While Shaina Pellington carried the scoring load for APR, her teammates struggled to provide meaningful support. APR’s offense appeared disjointed, with poor shot selection and a lack of composure under pressure. They also allowed FBA to score 11 second-chance points, further compounding their struggles. Despite a late push in the fourth quarter, APR’s efforts fell short as FBA maintained their composure and sealed the win.

This victory is a significant statement for FBA, proving they are a force to be reckoned with in the 2024 WBLA. Their ability to overcome a powerhouse like APR speaks volumes about their resilience and tactical acumen. For APR, this loss serves as a wake-up call. As one of the favorites, they must regroup quickly to avoid further setbacks.

The Marius Ndiaye Arena has become a proving ground where reputations are challenged, and underdogs rise. With this win, FBA has thrown the WBLA wide open, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this thrilling tournament.
