FIBA Africa U16 Regional Youth Camp 2024 Wraps Up in the City of Douala

The recently concluded 2024 FIBA Africa U16 Regional Youth Camp, held in Douala from the 14th to 17th of October 2024 at the prestigious Japoma Arena, marked a significant milestone in nurturing the next generation of African basketball talent. This camp, aimed at enhancing the players' skills and broadening their understanding of the game, offered a platform for young athletes to engage in competitive activities while promoting friendship and unity.

The camp brought together young basketball players from across Africa, giving them the chance to work under expert coaches and mentors like Joe Touomo, Cheikh Sarr, Don Showalter, Irv Roland and Alfred Aboya. Through drills, workshops, and friendly competitions, the participants improved not just their basketball abilities but also their vision and knowledge of the sport.

The atmosphere fostered camaraderie and bonding, making the camp a unique environment where competition and friendship thrived simultaneously. Several exciting events and competitions spiced up the camp's activities.

The Three-Point Contest was a thrilling event, showcasing the best shooters of the camp. Players demonstrated their precision from beyond the arc, and the competition ended with a standout performance from Ibrahim Iniola from Nigeria as winner of the contest.

In the King of the Court challenge, the players’ one-on-one skills were put to the test in intense matchups. The event was a crowd favourite, as each team fought hard to claim the crown. This competition allowed the young players to display their creativity, ball-handling, and scoring abilities. The tournament was another key event, which brought teamwork to the forefront.

This fast-paced format emphasised quick decision-making, court awareness, and the ability to adapt to different playing styles. The champions of the tournament; Adem Rafrafi(TUN), Nkema Princely(CMR) and Bechir Briant(CMR) walked away with a sense of pride, having proven themselves in this high-energy format.

The culmination of the camp was the highly anticipated All-Star Game between Team Bamenda and Team Kribi. The game was packed with thrilling moments, as the top talents from the camp faced off in a showcase of the best skills and teamwork displayed throughout the event. Both teams played with passion, delivering an exciting contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Team Kribi carried the day with an outscoring win over Team Bamenda.

All-Star 5 and MVP: Rising Stars Shine

At the end of the camp, the All-Star 5 was announced, celebrating the best performers of the event. These five players distinguished themselves throughout the camp with their consistent play, leadership, and sportsmanship:

  • Adem Rafrafi (TUN)
  • Mehdi Berrada (MAR)
  • Mustapha Touray (GAM)
  • Akech Aguer (SSD)
  • Boddia Rayan (CMR)

Standing at 5'10", the 2024 FIBA Africa U16 Regional Youth Camp MVP, Adem Rafrafi from Tunisia, was a standout among his peers. Rafrafi's combination of skill, vision, and basketball IQ made him a clear leader on the court, earning him the most prestigious individual award of the camp. His ability to dominate games and elevate the performance of his teammates set him apart, and his future in the sport looks incredibly promising.

The FIBA Africa U16 Regional Youth Camp in Douala was more than just a basketball event; it was a testament to the bright future of African basketball. By creating an environment that fosters both personal and athletic development, the camp plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation of players who will eventually represent Africa on the global stage.

With events like the Three-Point Contest, King of the Court, and the All-Star Game, these young players left the camp with sharpened skills, new friendships, and a deeper understanding of the game.

It was very exciting for me since it was the very first time i ever left my country. So I'm very happy about the youth camp experience. i had to give it all and i'm happy I made the All-Star team and we won.

As the dust settled on an incredible camp, it was difficult to say goodbye to the newly created bond the emotions were high ,but one thing is certain: the future of African basketball is in good hands, and the talent showcased in Douala will continue to shine in years to come.
