Zone 2 Weekly

Mali: New Partnerships and Youth Development

In Mali, basketball is on the rise with new partnerships being formed to boost the sport. The recently elected president of the federation, Jean Claude SIDIBE, has been working hard to establish relationships with other countries in the region.

One of his most notable partnerships is with the Ivory Coast federation. This partnership has been in place for three years and focuses on providing training opportunities to young players.

Recently, the fifth edition of a youth basketball training program was held in #Mali. For two days, 53 young players from the underage and cadet categories had the opportunity to develop their skills and learn from experienced coaches. This is a positive sign for the future of #basketball in Mali and for the country's youth national teams, which have already been successful on the #African continent.

Guinea: Preparations for FIBA AfroCan 2023 and University Partnerships

Finally in Guinea, the FIBA AfroCan 2023 is set to take place and the Guinean Basketball Federation (FGBB) is determined to put their best foot forward.

The FGBB has a plan to mobilise its top local players to represent their country in the international competition, and as part of this effort, a special commission will be established in February 2023. The purpose of the commission will be to monitor and assess the talent of local players during the 2022-2023 federal competitions.

In addition to their preparations for the FIBA AfroCan 2023, the Guinean Basketball Federation is also focused on promoting the sport within the university community.

On January 31, 2023, the Executive Committee of the FGBB met with the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation to finalise a partnership aimed at promoting basketball in universities, organising and supervising national and international university competitions, and raising awareness about careers in sport for the Professional Basketball League. The #partnership aims to reach 60,000 students and provide them with information and opportunities to pursue a career in basketball.

The FGBB is committed to making the most of their opportunity to host the FIBA #AfroCan 2023 and promoting the sport of basketball in their country. Their efforts to mobilise local talent and promote the sport within universities are part of a larger strategy to increase the popularity and competitiveness of basketball in #Guinea.
