Egypt's winless streak in the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2024 continued in the round of 16, where they faced Team USA. The American squad, led by Coach Meg Barber, barely broke a sweat as they cruised to a dominant 114-45 victory, advancing to the quarterfinals.
From the outset, it was evident that the game was a mismatch. Team USA quickly established their dominance, jumping to a 20-point lead with a 27-7 outcome in the first quarter. The Americans continued their relentless assault in the subsequent quarters, outscoring Egypt 28-10, 35-13, and 24-15, respectively.
One of the game's highlights was Team USA's exceptional playmaking, resulting in 33 assists, marking the third-best single-game record in the competition's history. Their effective ball movement also led to 39 two-point field goals, tying the fourth all-time mark set by Canada in 2012.
McKenna Woliczko was a standout performer, contributing 10 points, nine rebounds, four steals, three assists, and one blocked shot. Hailee Swain and Jerzy Robinson were also instrumental in the victory, scoring 20 points to lead the USA's offensive charge.
For Egypt, Khadiga Abouelghait was the leading scorer with 13 points, but her efforts were not enough to keep her team competitive against the overwhelming American offence.
Having been relegated to the classification matches, Egypt now faces a challenging African derby against Mali, a rematch of the U16 final. This encounter will determine their final standing in the tournament as they seek to salvage some pride after a brutal campaign.
