Gabon is set to take on the challenge of the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers, which will run from 22-25 November 2024 in Dakar, Senegal. Drawn into a competitive Group B, Gabon will be up against basketball powerhouses Cameroon, Rwanda, and hosts Senegal.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Wilfried Dongo, the team is determined to make their mark in this campaign. Dongo has unveiled a squad of 12 players, carefully blending youthful energy and veteran experience to ensure Gabon is a formidable opponent.
At just 21, Boukosso Herman is one of the standout players in the squad. Known for his deadly shooting from long range, Herman, courtesy of his marksman skills, has become a poster boy for Moanda Basket. His recent performances in the Elite 16 Road to BAL have solidified his reputation as one of Gabon’s brightest basketball talents. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how he handles the pressure in this high-stakes tournament.
The team’s captain and veteran leader, Lerry Essono-Mve, brings invaluable experience and composure to the squad. As one of the team’s most seasoned players, Essono-Mve will play a dual role—leading on the court and mentoring the younger players. His presence ensures the team maintains its balance and focus in crucial moments.
Coach Dongo has strategically assembled a team that strikes a balance between dynamic youth and seasoned veterans. This blend provides energy and innovation with young players like Herman, who bring fresh ideas and relentless energy to the table. Veteran Essono-Mve will bring the maturity to face some of Africa’s top basketball nations. Known for their physical play and defensive mindset, Gabon’s game plan hinges on neutralising the opponents’ key players.
Gabon will have to overcome significant challenges like Cameroon, a physically dominant side with a history of consistent performances in AfroBasket tournaments; Rwanda, a rising force in African basketball known for their tactical discipline and sharpshooters; and Senegal, the host nation and one of Africa’s basketball giants who will enjoy the home-court advantage and come into the qualifiers as favourites.
