Hosts Senegal demonstrated remarkable resilience to secure a thrilling 87-83 victory over Cameroon, sealing a flawless 3-0 record in the first round of Group C in the AfroBasket 2025 Qualifiers. The nail-biting win at Dakar Arena on Sunday showcased the hosts" ability to withstand immense pressure and deliver when it mattered most.
From the outset, Senegal looked in control, building an 18-point lead through solid performances in the opening quarters, with runs of 25-21 and 19-17. Brancou Badio spearheaded their charge with an electric 31-point performance, marking yet another crucial outing for the team. His sharp shooting and timely contributions were the foundation of Senegal's success.
However, the third quarter saw a stunning Cameroonian resurgence. Not only did the visitors erase Senegal's comfortable lead, but they also managed to take control late in the fourth quarter.
Jeremiah Hill was at the heart of the comeback, delivering 18 points and nine assists. Alongside Hill, two other Cameroonians scored at least 16 points, showcasing the team's depth and determination.
Despite the momentum shift, Senegal regrouped in the final minute. With the game tied 83-83, Moustapha Diop's clutch put the hosts ahead with just 58 seconds remaining.
Moments later, Karim Mané delivered a game-defining block on Hill's layup attempt, capping off his impactful performance of 12 points in a contest marked by ten lead changes and countless swings of fortune.
Senegal's dominance on the boards was a key factor in their victory. They out-rebounded Cameroon 53-33 and tallied five blocks, demonstrating their defensive prowess. Meanwhile, Badio's 5-for-13 from behind the arc further highlights the team's offensive efficiency.
Reflecting on the game, Cameroon head coach Alfred Aboya commended Senegal’s effort.
"Hats off Senegal. They played an unbelievable game. They are a well-coached team. We fought, but it came down to the last minute. We look forward to the return window in February," he stated.
Senegal’s head coach DeSagana Diop echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing his team’s resolve.
"I have been around basketball for a long time, and I have seen big leads going in two minutes. But I am proud of my team because they never gave up," Diop said.
Despite the fiercely competitive nature of the game, both teams displayed parity in several statistical areas. They shared 18 assists apiece and posted identical free-throw percentages at 72.7%, underscoring how closely matched they were throughout the contest.
As Senegal celebrates their unbeaten run atop Group C, they’ll look to carry this momentum into the next window of games. Although Cameroon fell short in Dakar, they demonstrated their calibre and will undoubtedly aim for redemption in February.
