In a thrilling and highly anticipated encounter, Cameroon made history by clinching the bronze medal in their first-ever participation at the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket 2024, held in Pretoria. They triumphed over Uganda with a hard-fought 70-66 victory, showcasing their resilience and determination against a tough opponent.
The game tipped off with Cameroon taking a slight edge, leading by two points at the end of the first quarter, 15-13. Uganda, however, presented themselves as a serious offensive threat, gradually reducing Cameroon’s lead during each possession. Their steady ball movement and offensive rhythm helped them close the gap, and by halftime, Cameroon clung to a slim three-point lead, 31-28, thanks in part to a timely three-point shot by Angella Auma reducing the pressure on Uganda.
In the second half, Uganda turned up the intensity, with standout performances from Resty Nanangwe, who contributed 19 points and Modesta Anyango adding 16 points. The Ugandan duo kept Cameroon under constant pressure, bringing their team closer to taking control of the game. Despite Uganda’s offensive surge, Cameroon remained composed and focused on defense, contesting Uganda’s long-range shots and forcing them into tough, low-percentage attempts. This tactical adjustment began to pay off as Uganda’s offense faltered at key moments.
With Cameroon solid in defense, the side's offense clicked into gear, with Emedie Damaris stepping up in a huge way. Damaris posted a dominant double-double, finishing with 19 points and an impressive 24 rebounds. Her physical presence in the paint and on the boards proved to be a significant factor in preventing Uganda from taking the lead. She received significant support from Kipo Gisel, who also scored 19 points while grabbing seven rebounds, contributing to Cameroon’s relentless effort on both ends of the floor.
Cameroon managed to extend its lead, withstanding Uganda’s late-game efforts. The defensive pressure, combined with key offensive plays, ultimately allowed Cameroon to seal a 70-66 victory at the final buzzer.
We came with a lot of confidence despite the fact that we lost against Mali in the semis, it was just another game. We came here to win it did not go as we planned but thank God we made a name for Cameroon in our debut.
Emedie Damaris stated.
With this bronze medal, Cameroon celebrates a historic achievement, marking their first-ever podium finish in their debut appearance at the AfroBasket tournament. Their remarkable performance in the tournament has set the stage for future success and further development in women’s basketball within the nation.
