The young Pharaohs' late game surge came too late in their Round of 16 game against New Zealand, where they ultimately fell 85-64 in the 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup. Despite outscoring Australia in the third quarter, 21-12, and narrowly winning the final quarter, 19-18, the deficit from the earlier quarters proved insurmountable.
Egypt's struggles were evident from the start. A catastrophic first quarter, where they fell behind 32-11, including a devastating 17-0 run by Australia, set the tone for the game. The second period saw a continuation of Egypt's woes as the young Tall Blacks extended their lead. By halftime, Australia had built a commanding 55-24 lead.
Ali Assran was a standout performer for Egypt, keeping their hopes alive with a game-high 21 points. Despite the loss, the young Egyptians showed resilience, competing closely in rebounds (42-40) and maintaining a relatively low number of turnovers (19) compared to their previous matches. They also dominated their opponent in second-chance points.
Egypt now faces one more match to avoid returning empty-handed. They will compete for a place between 9th and 16th against China on Friday, July 5, 2024.
