Group D hosts, Egypt remained perfect as they saw off Madagascar in Game Day 2, at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall, in Cairo. The Pharaohs outplayed a very combative Malagasy side to finish with a 97-66 win.
In a thrilling showdown at the FIBA 2025 AfroBasket Qualifiers, Egypt displayed a masterclass in basketball execution, securing a convincing victory against a spirited Madagascar. The game unfolded as a tale of resilience, strategic brilliance, and individual prowess, ultimately resulting in a triumph for the Pharaohs.
In the battle, Madagascar showcased tenacity on the boards, out rebounding Egypt 47-46. However, their achilles' heel surfaced in shooting efficiency, with more than half of their field goal attempts missing the mark. Notably, the Islanders showcased precision from the free-throw line, converting 10 out of 13 attempts, boasting a stellar 76% success rate.
Despite Madagascar's strong rebounding effort, Egypt proved their mettle in every other aspect of the game. The Pharaohs orchestrated a flawless offensive and defensive performance, leaving an indelible mark on the court. They capitalised on turnovers and fast break opportunities, accumulating a staggering 16 points in each category. Second-chance points proved pivotal, contributing 20 to their scoreboard. In the paint, Egypt's dominance was unmistakable, outscoring their opponents 42 to 14. The depth of the Pharaohs' bench was a game-changer, outscoring Madagascar 49-23.
Individual performances illuminated the court, with Yusuf Shehata emerging as Egypt's top scorer with 17 points. His dynamic play was complemented by 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist, showcasing his all-around contribution. Annas Mahmoud, a standout performer on Game Day 1, shifted his focus to dominating the boards, grabbing an impressive 10 rebounds.
Egypt's scoring was a collective effort, with four additional players finishing with double digits. The balanced contributions reflected the team's cohesion and versatility, solidifying their status as a formidable force in the AfroBasket Qualifiers.
Post-game reflections echoed the intensity of the encounter. Malagasy head coach Alphonse Marie Jeannot Ravonimbola acknowledged the challenge posed by the experienced Egyptian side.
"The Egyptians were very strong. Despite everything, we tried to fight back. But they were very skillful, especially at3-point shooting," he noted.
Madagascan Sitraka Raharimanantoanina concurred on the tough competition, emphasising the need for consistency at this level.
"We need to be consistent in our performances."
Egypt's Henrik Rodl offered credit to Madagascar for putting up a good fight.
"We need to give Madagascar some credit. They took some crazy shots, and they never gave up."
As both teams look ahead to their remaining matchups, the focus is on improvement. Raharimanantoanina stressed the importance of defensive improvement for Madagascar.
"We've got one match left to play, and this will be our last chance to go home with a win for this window. We need to improve, especially in defense."
Egypt team captain Haytham Khalifa echoed this sentiment of continuous improvement.
"We'll try to be better every day.We'll try to play 40 minutes in the games and give it all," he concluded.
This now sets the stage for an intense battle in the upcoming matchups and laying the foundation for a potential AfroBasket.
