In their final match of the FIBA U17 World Cup, Egypt faced Germany in the battle for 11th and 12th place. This game was their second encounter of the tournament. In the first clash, Egypt suffered a narrow defeat to their German rivals earlier during the group phase, losing by a single point, 72-71, on July 2.
Hopes were high for a possible Egyptian victory, but the game turned into a demonstration of German dominance over the 2023 U16 AfroBasket silver medalists.
Germany controlled the game from the outset, winning each of the first three quarters decisively: 23-17 in the first, 23-15 in the second, and 23-12 in the third. It was only in the final quarter that Egypt showed some resistance, edging out Germany 19-20.
Despite competing well in the rebounding battle, Egypt's performance was marred by 21 turnovers, which proved costly. Throughout their U17 World Cup campaign, the young Egyptians had moments of brilliance interspersed with less impressive performances.
However, several standout players, including Omar Essam, Mohamed Wael, and Ali Assran, provided reasons for optimism about the future of Egyptian basketball.
