Egypt Breaks Four-Game Losing Streak with 85-73 Victory in FIBA U17 World Cup Classification Clash

Following their 85-64 defeat and elimination in the Round of 16 at the hands of New Zealand, Egypt faced China, who had been ousted by Lithuania 76-70, in a 9th-16th place classification match.

As usual, the young Egyptians started strong, a consistent trend in all their games. However, they often falter towards the end. Against China, on Friday, July 5th, they initially led but saw the Chinese team surge ahead to win the first quarter 23-18. The second period showed improvement for Egypt as they tightened their defence and became more effective in offensive transitions. The match remained balanced, with the teams frequently drawing even (30-30).

By halftime, the young Pharaohs, having won the second quarter 20-12, by two points, 38-36. This was promising, given that China had won all four previous encounters between these two teams. They triumphed by five points in a 2018 classification match for 15th and 16th place (68-63), and during group stages in 2014 (84-58), 2012 (80-68), and 2010 (103-72).

This year, the two teams were closely matched, evidenced by the third quarter ending in a perfect tie (21-21). The score was 59-57 in favor of Egypt, setting the stage for a potential victory as the final quarter began.

With one minute remaining, Egypt led by thirteen points, securing their first win in this world championship. The final score was 85-73, with Omar Essam leading as the top scorer with 18 points.

Egypt will face the winner between the Philippines and Argentina on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
