As various European-based league regular seasons approach their conclusion or enter playoffs, general managers and club presidents are discreetly, albeit sometimes not so subtly, strategising for the upcoming 2024-25 season, seeking players to enhance their squads.
Amidst the intense negotiations in the European basketball transfer market, Luis Arbalejo, the General Manager of Spanish ACB (Liga Endesa) and Euroleague team Valencia, has made a bold move. This week, reports surfaced that Arbalejo extended a 2-year contract offer to Matt Costello, the star player of the Cote d'Ivoire national team, aiming to lure him away from domestic and Euroleague rivals Baskonia.
The center's existing contract with the Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain-based club expires in June. He is widely anticipated to sign with Valencia, currently ranked five spots above Baskonia in fourth place. Costello is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, averaging 11.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 54.7% from the field and 40.3% from beyond the arc.
According to Spanish ACB (Liga Endesa) league regulations, Costello's Ivorian passport permits him to compete as a Cotonou player without occupying a non-EU position.
