Game Review: AHL vs CNS

CNSS of Congo Falls Short in Quarterfinals Against Al Ahly, Suffer Heavy 89-36 Defeat

In the first quarter-final clash at the Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA), the CNSS of Congo faced a daunting challenge against the Egyptian powerhouse, Al Ahly. After an incredible journey that saw them qualify for the quarter-finals against all odds, including a hard-fought victory over their long-time rival, Alexandre Sporting Club, spirits were high in the CNSS camp. However, the match against Al Ahly would prove to be a harsh lesson in the realities of high-stakes basketball.

The game tipped off with an overwhelming intensity from Al Ahly, who seemed to take the encounter incredibly personally. From the outset, they displayed a combination of aggressive defense and efficient scoring, quickly making it clear that CNSS would have their work cut out to keep pace. By the end of the first quarter, the Congolese side found themselves struggling, having failed to rack up even ten points against Al Ahly's relentless onslaught.

The second and third quarters mirrored the first, with CNSS unable to find their offensive rhythm. Their scoring woes continued, and by the fourth quarter, they trailed by as much as 55 points. With a dismal total shot percentage of just 26%, their inability to convert opportunities allowed Al Ahly to dominate the game from start to finish.

Malian guard Bintou Drame, who had been a key player for CNSS throughout the tournament, seemed weighed down by the pressure of the occasion, managing to score only 10 points amidst a sea of defensive challenges. The turnovers proved detrimental as nervous ball-handling and rushed decisions allowed Al Ahly to capitalize effectively on CNSS's mistakes.

Meanwhile, Al Ahly’s Dyaisha Cheryce led her team with an impressive performance, dropping 20 points as she effortlessly exploited defensive lapses. Teammates Abdelgadawad Meral and Ndioma Kane contributed significantly, each tallying 11 points and ensuring that Al Ahly maintained their commanding lead straight to the semi-finals of the WBLA.

It’s just been a good experience overall I think the competition here has been great. It’s been physical. Nothing has been easy without the team we won’t be where we are right now.

Dyaisha Cheryce voiced out.

Ultimately, the final score of 89-36 was a stark reflection of the game’s dynamics. While the loss was undeniably disappointing for CNSS, their journey to the quarter-finals marked a significant milestone in their young history. The setback against Al Ahly, albeit tough, will serve as a valuable learning experience as they aim to build on their success and come back stronger in future competitions.
