African basketball continues to dominate international headlines, with the Mozambique Basketball Federation (FMB) making a notable move by hiring Serbian Slavoljub Gorunovic as the new head coach of the women's national team. Gorunovic replaces Spanish coach Iñaki Garcia, who had to step down due to family reasons.
With the FIBA Women's World Cup pre-qualifiers in Mexico from August 19th to 25th, 2024, rapidly approaching, the FMB swiftly brought Gorunovic to Maputo, the country's capital. He will be officially presented to the media and team on Thursday, July 18th.
Slavoljub Gorunovic brings extensive experience to the role, having coached for 17 years across various countries, including Serbia, Qatar, Russia, Turkey, Morocco, Kuwait, China, Tunisia, Taiwan, and the Philippines.
Notably, the 54-year-old was a consultant for TNT Tropang Giga, helping to lead them to the 2023 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Championship. Gorunovic's diverse background and proven track record position him well to guide Mozambique through the upcoming pre-qualifiers.
