Mali Squeeze Past Mexico 62-61 in Scrappy FIBA U17 Women's World Cup Opener

The 2024 FIBA U17 Women's World Cup tipped off on Saturday, July 13. Several victories and record-breaking performances set the tone and stage for an exciting tournament in Mexico.

African champions Mali started their campaign with a thrilling 62-61 victory against the tournament hosts, Mexico. Mali took an early lead, racing to an 18-7 advantage in the opening quarter, providing a crucial cushion as the game intensified.

Despite the fervent support of the home crowd, Mexico couldn't overturn Mali's dominance. Mali continued their momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Mexico 23-21, securing a 13-point lead at halftime.

Mexico came out strong after the break, outscoring Mali 17-15 in the third quarter and delivering a fiery 16-6 run in the final quarter. In the game's closing seconds, Carol Enriquez scored off a forced turnover, bringing the game within one point, but Mali managed to hold on to clinch the win.

Mali's victory was anchored by Hatoumata Singare's remarkable performance. She had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Her 12 offensive rebounds tied the record for most in a U17 Women's Basketball World Cup game, a record set by Egypt's Jana Elalfy on July Women's 22 against New Zealand.

Couda Keita led Mali's top scoring option leading with 14 points, while U16 African Championship MVP Assitan Diarisso contributed 11 points. Singare's relentless effort and her team’s overall resilience secured Mali's first win of the tournament.
