Kenya stormed into their matchup against Burundi with a dominant first-quarter performance, setting the tone for a commanding victory in the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone 5 Pre-Qualifiers. From the opening whistle, Kenya’s offensive execution and defensive intensity overwhelmed their opponents, racing to a 26-10 lead in the first ten minutes.
Burundi struggled to find their rhythm early on but showed resilience in the second quarter. Their defensive adjustments paid off as they limited Kenya’s scoring to eight points, cutting the halftime deficit to nine. However, despite their efforts, Burundi still found breaking down Kenya’s defensive schemes and establishing offensive production challenging.
After the break, Kenya returned with a well-structured and complex game plan that proved too difficult for Burundi to counter. The Kenyans outscored their opponents in both the third and fourth quarters, extending their lead and sealing a comfortable win. On the other hand, Burundi failed to surpass the 20-point mark in any of the previous two periods, highlighting their offensive struggles.
Victoria Reynolds was Kenya's standout performer, scoring an impressive 22 points and dishing out seven assists. Her leadership and scoring ability were instrumental in securing Kenya's first win of the pre-qualifiers, especially after tough losses to South Sudan and Uganda. For Burundi, this defeat extends their losing streak, leaving them with much to improve before their next outing. On the other hand, Kenya will take confidence from this performance as they aim to build momentum in the tournament.
