Kadji Sports Academy (KSA) kicked off their Elite 16 Road to BAL campaign with a statement-making victory, defeating Ghana's Spintex Knights 84-71 in a game that featured intense defensive play and a thrilling second-half transformation. Both teams fought hard in a gritty, turnover-heavy matchup that was deadlocked 38-38 at halftime, but KSA emerged as the more polished side after the break, tightening their play and capitalizing on key offensive opportunities to claim their first win.
Right from tip-off, it was clear that both KSA and Spintex were bringing a defensive mindset to the game. Each team worked tirelessly to disrupt the other's offense, leading to frequent turnovers that kept the pace fast but the scoring restrained. The Knights’ aggressive defense, combined with KSA’s own disciplined approach, resulted in a tense first half where neither side could gain a significant edge.
With the score tied at 38 going into halftime, it seemed anyone’s game. Both teams had been careful to lock down on defense, and each managed to recover quickly from mistakes, keeping the game balanced and fans on the edge of their seats. The third quarter would be the turning point.
After halftime, KSA returned to the floor with renewed focus and a strategic shift. Limiting their turnovers and seizing control of the game’s tempo, they began to dominate. Leading this charge was Simon Bileg, who emerged as a standout with 16 points, showcasing his ability to find the rim with accuracy and make plays under pressure.
Supporting Bileg’s effort was Makthar Gueye, who added 15 points, along with Kenneth Kadji and Jeremy Nzeulie, who scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. Their cohesive teamwork and calculated plays allowed KSA to finish around the basket with a newfound efficiency, stretching the lead and controlling the momentum.
KSA’s offensive prowess became undeniable as they converted opportunities at the rim while maintaining a disciplined defense to prevent Spintex from closing the gap. The Knights struggled to counter KSA’s strategy, with KSA’s defense forcing Spintex into rushed shots and turnovers that stifled their scoring attempts.
Despite the loss, the Spintex Knights had commendable performances from Frederick Asante and James Amotoe, who combined for 18 and 16 points, respectively. They led the scoring for Spintex and showed flashes of resilience, but the team’s overall offensive consistency couldn’t match KSA’s second-half surge. The defensive pressure they applied in the first half didn’t carry over with the same intensity, and KSA’s heightened focus and precision made the difference.
We had to slow down the game for us to be more effective.
