Uganda's quest for qualification for the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket suffered another setback as they lost 71-59 to Libya in Monastir, Tunisia.
As the opening window of the qualifiers unfolded, the Silverbacks set their sights on securing their fourth consecutive berth in the FIBA AfroBasket tournament. However, Libya dented those aspirations by clinching a victory over their Group B rival. With both teams tallying an equal number of wins, the stage was set for a crucial showdown to determine the group's Window One runner-up.
The game was a physical battle for the Silverbacks, who had to scrap for every rebound. Despite their best efforts, they conceded 40 points from the bench, 16 points off turnovers, and 34 points in the paint.
In a hard-fought matchup, Libya applied relentless offensive pressure in the paint, mainly targeting Uganda's big men. They capitalised on offensive rebounds, racking up 15 points from second-chance opportunities.
Conversely, Uganda needed help finding their offensive rhythm, as they missed several consecutive opportunities. Robinson Opong, unable to replicate his remarkable 39-point performance from the previous game, was limited to just six points for the Silverbacks.
Conversely, Libya showcased a balanced offensive effort, with four players reaching double digits. It was pivotal in securing their second-place finish in Group B. Naseim Ismail Salem Badrush tallied 14 points, and Sofian Hamad contributed 16.
At the same time, Mohamed Sadi and Alrhaman Almagrhibi each added 12 and 16 points, respectively. The Libyans' performance aligns with their qualification ambitions, with just one loss in Window One against the formidable Cape Verde Blue Sharks.
