Game Report: Cape Verde Win Opening FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers Game

Cape Verde went head to head against Silverbacks of Uganda in the opening game of the FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers. Since the second qualifying window of the 2021 AfroBasket Qualifiers held in Alexandria, Egypt in November 2020, Cape Verde and Uganda have met five times.

It was a hard-fought match on both ends of the court, with Cape Verde maintaining a slim lead through the first two quarters. However, Team Uganda showed resilience and determination, refusing to concede defeat.

Even without two key players, Ivan Almeida and Walter Tavares, Cape Verde demonstrated remarkable consistency and stability in their debut during Window One. They managed to maintain a narrow two-point lead, with the first half ending at 34-32 in favour of the Blue Sharks.

In the second half, the Cape Verdean team, known as the Blue Sharks, displayed heightened aggression, particularly on defence. They pressured the Ugandan guards, forcing them into challenging situations and prompting difficult decisions.

This defensive strategy proved effective as Cape Verde capitalised on its opportunities, executing successful shots and ultimately securing victory in the first game of the qualifiers. Despite the absence of their top players, Cape Verde showcased their resilience and determination, delivering an impressive performance. Ish Wainright's absence was notably felt during Uganda's debut Window One game against Cape Verde.

Robinson Opong scored a game-high 25 points, but his effort was not enough to save Uganda. Marcus Armani Santos Silva emerged as the standout leader for the African islanders, contributing 15 points and six rebounds with an impressive efficiency rating exceeding 20. His performance was pivotal in securing a crucial victory for Cape Verde in their Group B clash.

Uganda will face D’Tigers of Nigeria while Cape Verde will go against Libya in Game Day Two for Group B in the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers.
