FIBA Africa Zone 4 Weekly Review: 15/08/2024

Cameroon

The Cameroon U18 Men's and Women's basketball teams are in an intense training camp preparing for the fast-approaching FIBA U18 AfroBasket, which will take place in South Africa from September 1 to 14, 2024. This tournament is particularly significant for Cameroon, as it marks the Men's team's first appearance in 18 years and the Women's team's debut at this prestigious event.

The training camp aims to sharpen the teams' competitive edge, focusing on skill development, strategic planning, and team cohesion. Both squads are guided by a young but experienced coaching staff that works tirelessly to ensure the players are in peak condition.

The teams are made up of a selection of the best young talents from all over the country and abroad. Head coaches Kevin Ngwese for the Men and Lonteu Majolie for the Women submitted lists of 16 players for the men and 15 players for the women, respectively. So far, only 14 players from each selection are present in training camp.

For the Men’s team, this return to the AfroBasket stage is a momentous occasion, reflecting years of rebuilding and development. The Women’s team, making their first-ever appearance, is eager to showcase their talent and make history for Cameroonian basketball.

Both teams are highly motivated, with players showing great determination and commitment in every training session. Their goal is not just to compete but to significantly impact the tournament, bringing pride to Cameroon on the continental stage. As the competition approaches, both teams are entirely focused on their preparation, driven by the opportunity to represent their country and achieve success in South Africa.

Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo is gearing up to host the FIBA Zone 4 Women’s AfroBasket qualifiers from August 19th to 22nd, a crucial event in African basketball. The qualifiers will feature a high-stakes head-to-head confrontation between DR Congo and Cameroon, with both teams vying for a coveted spot in the AfroBasket tournament.

Playing on home soil, DR Congo will capitalise on their home-court advantage, drawing energy from local fans as it seeks to solidify its place in the continental competition. The team, bolstered by the support and familiarity of playing in front of a home crowd, expects to perform well during the tournament. On the other hand, Cameroon has not lost to DR Congo in the AfroBasket qualifiers for the past five years. We hope for an electric and intense game between these two.

Cameroon Senior Women's Team

Cameroon, on the other hand, is preparing to challenge DR Congo with equal determination. The Cameroonian squad is focused on executing their game plan and overcoming the pressures of playing away from home. They are determined to earn their qualification by showcasing their talent and resilience in this decisive match.

The clash between DR Congo and Cameroon is set to be an electrifying encounter, with both teams aiming to bring their A-game to the court in pursuit of AfroBasket qualification. The outcome of this intense battle will determine which nation moves forward to compete on the continental stage, making it a thrilling event that no basketball fan across Africa would want to miss.
