BAL SAHARA CONFERENCE - Team profile : ASC Ville de Dakar

ASC Ville de Dakar’s rise to the Basketball Africa League isn’t just a story of underdogs finding their moment—it’s a glimpse into a team that’s rewriting its own history as it’s being made. Though the club itself was founded back in 1980, the men’s basketball section only came to life in 2014.

Will Perry

In just over a decade, they’ve gone from relative obscurity to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Africa’s elite. In 2024, they pulled off what few saw coming: a national title win that earned them a ticket to the continent’s biggest stage.

The women’s side of ASCVD had already laid the groundwork for a winning culture. They’ve dominated domestically, collecting league titles in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and again in 2024. That success built a foundation, a sense of identity that the men’s team is now tapping into.

Though their regular season in 2024 was far from flawless, they peaked when it mattered most, clinching their first ever Nationale 1 title in dramatic fashion. That victory not only stunned critics—it validated a project that’s been quietly taking shape behind the scenes.

Devine Eke

Stepping into the BAL, ASCVD is armed with more than just momentum. They’ve stacked their roster with proven talent, players who’ve not only played in the BAL before but made a mark. Will Perry headlines the list—a smooth, high-IQ guard known for his leadership, clutch scoring, and steady hand under pressure. He’s no stranger to the competition, entering his fourth BAL season with a calm, battle-tested presence.

Alongside him is Abdoulaye Harouna, a dynamic winger, who featured in the 2024 All-BAL Defensive Team, and Ater Majok, a physical big man who brings shot-blocking and rebounding grit to the paint. All three are seasoned professionals with a reputation for work ethic and leadership.

And then there’s the next wave — Devine Chukwuemeka Eke, a name quickly gaining traction across the African basketball landscape. The young Nigerian forward was instrumental in Rivers Hoopers’ podium finish last season, bringing a mix of athleticism and hunger that adds a new layer to ASCVD’s attack.

Ater Majok

But with great ambition comes honest challenges. Their path to the Senegalese title was more Cinderella than steamroller, raising questions about whether lightning can strike twice. And while the star power is undeniable, there’s no ignoring the fact that Perry, Majok, and Harouna are all in their 30s. In a tournament known for its physical demands and relentless tempo, the ability to stay healthy and sharp over several games could be the real test.

Still, inside the locker room, there’s a quiet confidence that borders on defiant belief. Team captain Thierno Niang summed it up with the clarity of someone who’s seen the work firsthand.

“We’re an experienced team that will play our chances to the fullest, betting on both youth and experience,” he said. “The club has selected eight local players for this fifth edition of the BAL. That shows they have potential and that our domestic league is working well. Plus, Harouna is a BAL regular, and this is Will Perry’s fourth time in the competition. They bring experience, and we’re going to work together,” Niang underlined in the local media.

Niang is adamant : the recent arrivals are reinforcements, not replacements.

“It’s great to have three or four reinforcements to complete the group. The foundation is already solid, and the local players have experience. I think mentally and physically we’ll be ready on game day.”

He also emphasized how the team has spent the past month fine-tuning their chemistry and responsibilities.

“There are key roles we need to manage—a skilled point guard, a wing who can score, and a strong presence under the basket.”

That preparation will be put to the test immediately. ASC Ville de Dakar opens their BAL campaign against Tunisian giants US Monastir on April 26—a formidable first challenge. Two days later, they’ll face Kriol Star, followed by a heavyweight clash against reigning BAL champions Petro de Luanda to close out their first round in the Sahara Conference.

It’s a brutal stretch, but it’s also the perfect proving ground. For ASCVD, this isn't just about keeping up—it’s about making a statement. They're not here to admire the view. They’re here to compete, and maybe, just maybe, surprise a few more people along the way.
