Al Ahly Reunites Hagar Amer and Cierra Dillard as Egypt’s WBLA Champions Chase Back-to-Back Titles

October and November are usually the most exciting months in African women’s professional basketball. Some clubs compete for a place in the Women’s Basketball League Africa December showcase, while others negotiate to sign top-tier talent to contend for the WBLA title.

One of those clubs is the 2025 Women’s Basketball League Africa champion Al Ahly Sporting Club, which has made two major star signings: bringing back Egyptian basketball legend Hagar Amer and signing Senegal basketball star Cierra Dillard.

The pairing of Amer and Dillard, two of African basketball’s most decorated stars, at the WBLA level is a throwback to their time together playing for North African giant ASC Sporting in 2023. The North and West African stars, alongside Destiny Pitts and Yacine Diop, finished 7-0 en route to the WBLA title and Dillard’s WBLA MVP Award. In the final, Amer dropped 32 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and three steals, while Dillard had 17 points, four assists, and four steals.

Recently, the pair teamed up for ASC Sporting to help clinch another title, the 27th Arab Women’s Club Basketball Championship. Hagar Amer returns to the WBLA for another title run after a triumphant 2025 campaign, when she averaged 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds while shooting 37.5% from long range.

Amer’s individual talent and performances didn’t go unnoticed by the media, as she was also named to the WBLA All-Tournament Team (All-Star Five) alongside Aliyah Matharu (ASC Ville de Dakar), Yacine Diop (APR), and Ingvild Mucauro (Ferroviario de Maputo).

Along with the recent 27th Arab Women’s Club Basketball Championship title, Dillard, in a self-proclaimed comeback year, helped ASC Sporting win another Egyptian national league title and averaged 23.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists during the 2026 FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in August.
