After a gruelling Game One between Morocco and Libya, which ended in a 75-75 draw on Sunday, February 18, 2024, Libya secured a significant lead in the second game on Tuesday. They outscored Morocco with a final score of 71-63, clinching the last spot in the upcoming FIBA 2025 AfroBasket qualifiers.
In preparation for their challenging matches against Cape Verde, Uganda, and Nigeria in the upcoming 2025 FIBA AfroBasket qualifiers, the Libyan team will arrive in Tunisia a few days early. Their group games are set to take place from February 23rd to 25th, 2024. Libya is determined to break their 16-year absence from the Men’s AfroBasket and is eager to approach things differently this time around. Their last participation was as hosts in 2009.
Participating in the Pre-qualifying tournament and securing a spot in the upcoming 2025 FIBA AfroBasket qualifiers holds immense significance for Libyan basketball. Former Basketball Africa League guard, Mohamed Sadi, emphasises the importance of seizing this opportunity to propel Libyan basketball onto a larger stage and how difficult it will be:
We are fully prepared and ready to play every game till the end and hopefully we can make it happen. It means a lot for us, Libyans, to qualify after a long time. It is not going to be an easy ride but we are going to give our best.
Jalal Saeid delivered an outstanding performance, against Morocco, notching 19 points and ten rebounds, while Naseim Badrush made a notable contribution with 16 points and eight assists, boosting Libya's box score.
Team Libya will play their first qualifier game on Friday 23rd February against Nigeria, with the game scheduled to tip off at 2pm [GMT]
