With their pre-Olympic training camp concluded and a four-game friendly schedule completed, the South Sudan Basketball Federation, led by former NBA All-Star Luol Deng, has unveiled their official 12-man roster for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.
The announcement, met with much fanfare and intrigue, followed two high-profile games in London against Great Britain and the USA. Despite the excitement, it was also revealed that Australian-born former NBA draft pick Thon Maker would not be eligible to play for South Sudan.
The 12-person roster is highlighted by Euroleague-bound stars Carlik Jones and former NBA player Wenyen Gabriel. A dynamic guard, Jones brings scoring and playmaking abilities, while Gabriel, known for his offensive and defensive versatility, adds a strong frontcourt presence. Joining them is 17-year-old 2025 NBA Draft rising star Khaman Maluach, a prodigy set to join the Duke Blue Devils in NCAA basketball next season. Maluach adds high-IQ defensive abilities as well as a youthful spark and immense potential to the squad.
Australia's National Basketball League (NBL) star Bul Kuol is a significant addition to the South Sudan team. His sharpshooting and defensive tenacity have significantly impacted the Australian league, and his ability to perform under pressure and deliver crucial plays is well-known. However, his competitive experience will be invaluable to the South Sudan team, providing scoring and defensive strength that should be crucial in key moments.
Joining Kuol is former Fenerbahçe wing Marial Shayok. Shayok brings a wealth of experience from top European competitions, where he has honed his skills and showcased his high IQ scoring expertise. His ability to create shots and contribute on both ends of the floor makes him a critical asset on the wing, capable of making significant contributions in crucial moments.
Rounding out the notable names is Charlotte Hornets forward JT Thor. Thor's presence adds another layer of versatility and athleticism to the squad. Known for his ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and defend multiple positions, Thor's NBA experience will also be a valuable addition to the team, providing leadership and a high level of play.
