South Sudan Mourns the Tragic Passing of Former National Team Player Dominik Philip.

This week, the African basketball community—particularly the South Sudanese basketball community—was shaken by the tragic passing of former South Sudan national team player Dominik Philip.

The 29-year-old, 6'2" guard played college basketball for the Southwestern Christian University Eagles in Division One of the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) and graduated in 2020. Philip then represented his country during the 2021 AfroBasket Pre-Qualifiers Zone 5 in January 2020 in Nairobi, Kenya, where he averaged 6.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game for the Bright Stars. Last year, Dominik Philip played for the Midtown Prestige in US-based The Basketball Tournament.

Although, details surrounding his passing have not been disclosed, the South Sudan Basketball Federation released a statement:

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of one of national team players Dominik Philip who represented the men’s national team at the start of our journey in 2020 in Zone 5 AfroBasket qualifiers.""Dominik represented the country with an incredible amount of passion and humility catching the fans eyes with his incredible jumping ability and dunks."

Former NBA All-Star and President of the South Sudan Basketball Federation Luol Deng released his own statement via Instagram:

"My brother, Dominik Philip, may your soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences go out to your family, friends, and loved ones.I am in disbelief and heartbroken over this tragic news. Dominik, thank you for being a kind soul and a caring friend to me and my family.

I remember when I first called you to invite you to be a part of what we are trying to build for our nation, to join the national team but before you answered, I could sense your excitement about contributing to something meaningful.

What stood out the most about you was your kindness, caring nature, and love for everyone. You have made a positive difference in all our lives, and we will forever remember you for your gentle spirit.My brother, thank you. Until we meet again, rest in peace."
