After his initial 10-day contract with the Detroit Pistons, Nigerian national team player Chimezie Metu has signed with the 2004 NBA Champions until the end of the season. The former USC Trojan, put pen to paper for the Pistons for his initial 10-day trial run over a week ago, during which time he averaged 7.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals.
This decision comes amidst the Pistons' ongoing struggles, despite their recent victory over the Washington Wizards with a score of 96-87. With a regular season record of 13-61, the team has only managed to secure two wins in their last ten games.
Metu started the 2023-24 season with the Phoenix Suns after signing with the Western Conference franchise in July 2023. While playing alongside superstars Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, the versatile forward appeared in 37 games, starting five, and maintained averages of 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds.
On Christmas Day, however, Metu delivered his best performance in a Suns' uniform, reaching a career-high double-double with 23 points and 19 rebounds off the bench in a tough 128–114 loss to the Dallas Mavericks [See Highlights Below].
In early February, Metu was part of a trade that sent him to the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team deal, which also included the Brooklyn Nets. However, the Grizzlies decided to waive him the very next day.
