After a tightly contested defensive battle with Libya, Cape Verde emerged victorious with an unblemished 2-0 record. Building on their earlier triumph against Uganda, Cape Verde secured another win on Game Day 2, prevailing 68-72.
Their impressive fourth-place finish in the 2021 AfroBasket tournament bolstered the Blue Sharks' confidence, fueling their belief that they can excel further in the upcoming FIBA AfroBasket 2025. However, they understand the importance of making a strong statement against their continental rivals during the qualifiers to realise this ambition.
Despite missing some key players, the Cape Verdeans showed remarkable resilience and stayed in the game. Their determination to walk away with the win was displayed throughout the game, especially in the dying minutes. Their balanced roster showcased their ability to rely on emerging talents and seasoned veterans to rise to the occasion and clinch victory.
Once again, Marcus Armani Santos Silva showcased his exceptional skills and commitment to representing his country, delivering an impressive performance with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. His contributions were instrumental in helping Cape Verde's stagnant offence.
During the initial two quarters, the score margin remained narrow as both teams carefully controlled possession but also faced turnovers. The first quarter finished 15-15, followed by a slim 1-point lead for the Blue Sharks at the end of the second quarter, with the score at 39-40.
After the halftime intermission, both teams engaged in a tactical battle on the court, exchanging tough shots and defensive manoeuvres. Libya capitalised on Cape Verde's turnovers, narrowing the scoring gap as they attempted to match their opponent's pace. Despite the Blue Sharks' efforts, the Libyans closed in, trailing by just one point at the end of the third quarter, 60-61.
In a closely contested matchup, Libya kept Cape Verde within striking distance, but the Blue Sharks utilised lockdown defence to maintain their lead and secure the victory. The fourth quarter saw minimal scoring as both teams faced defensive pressure. Despite scoring only 11 points in the final period, Cape Verde effectively limited Libya to eight points. Cape Verde's win was firmly cemented with a final score of 68-72.
