In an intense matchup at the Road to BAL 2025, Malawi’s Bravehearts redeemed themselves with a nail-biting 72-70 victory over Botswana Defense Force (BDF), breathing life into their hopes of qualifying for the Elite 16.
Coming off a tough loss to Matero Magic in their opening game, the Bravehearts knew that another defeat would drastically narrow their chances of advancing. Their win was especially impressive given the challenges they faced, including a reduced roster due to some players being sidelined over clearance issues.
From the onset, it was clear the game would be a battle. BDF started with an early one-point lead (5-4) just five minutes in, setting the stage for a back-and-forth contest that saw both teams refusing to back down. BDF maintained that narrow margin by the end of the first quarter and went into halftime with a slight edge at 40-37.
The second half intensified as BDF pushed their lead to seven points midway through the third quarter. Heading into the final period, they were up by five, seemingly in control as the Bravehearts struggled to close the gap.
However, the Bravehearts' determination was relentless. Led by Faad Billy, who scored a standout 22 points, they mounted a spectacular comeback in the last quarter. Harrison Banda provided strong support with a double-double, scoring 15 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and adding a crucial block.
Meanwhile, Ian Limbe contributed 16 points and 5 rebounds, playing a vital role in keeping his team within striking distance. Their cohesive teamwork and intense defensive efforts allowed the Bravehearts to chip away at BDF’s lead, tying the game at 63-63 in the opening minutes of the final stretch.
BDF put up a fight, but even with multiple players scoring in double digits, they couldn’t hold off Malawi’s fierce rally. Tanaka Ndyara led BDF’s efforts with an impressive double-double of his own, notching 20 points and 12 rebounds. Teammates Karabo Rabothaako and Munyaradzi Chidzomba added 16 and 14 points, respectively, contributing to BDF's consistent scoring. Despite these efforts, the Bravehearts’ momentum shift was undeniable. With only minutes left on the clock, they not only leveled the game but seized the lead, holding their ground in the face of BDF’s final offensive push.
When the buzzer sounded, the Bravehearts had secured a hard-fought 72-70 win, with their determination and teamwork carrying them through. The victory has given Malawi's Bravehearts a much-needed boost, keeping their dream of qualifying for the Elite 16 and making a name for themselves in African basketball within reach.
