Association Sportive du Port Autonome de Cotonou (ASPAC) from Benin arrive in Alexandria with nothing to lose. The Beninese runners-up secured qualification at the end of the Zone 3 qualifying tournament in Abuja in early December.
Although they were not the favourites against Nigeria Customs or MFM of Nigeria, the Portuaires took advantage of the absence of local defending champions Elan Coton from the tournament and worked hard on the floor to secure their place in Alexandria.
The Portuaires defeated MFM Queens (53-48) in a game in which they were considered the favourites. They then lost to Nigeria Customs (65-48). But with a 1-1 record, they are in the inaugural edition of the Africa Women Basketball League (AWBL) and they don't plan on letting the numbers slip.
Nigeria's Onaibe Jessica and Mali's Diarra Coumba, who finished in the top five in the qualifying tournament, will continue to carry the team and are ready to go all the way under coach Landry Adognon.
