In recent years player empowerment and the fast rise of sports media power as seen professional (and to a less extent many amateur) sports stars take control of their own narratives.
Unlike in the past, where "traditional" media outlets occasionally fabricated misleading stories, today's players are leveraging their influence to manage and craft their own stories directly, offering a more authentic and accurate representation of their journeys, both on and off the court. This evolution reflects a dynamic intersection between player autonomy and the evolving dynamics of sports media, fostering a more genuine connection between athletes and their audiences.
As part of this growing trend, global sports stars such as tennis superstar Naomi Osaka, Football legends Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand, along with NBA superstars Giannis Antetokounmpo, Lebron James, Steph Curry, Dwyane Wade, Paul George and Draymond Green have all launched their own boutique media companies. Several of these companies include branded YouTube channels and podcasts, providing players with opportunities to chronicle their lives, engage in conversations with fellow athletes, and directly connect with their fan base.
Abuja, Nigeria-born Euroleague star Chima Moneke is the latest to embrace this trend, having recently launched his YouTube channel. Like Benfica's Trey Drechsei and Nigerian-American Tai Odiase, Moneke will offer an intimate portrayal of his experiences both on and off the court through his newly created venture.
